"Analog" Section Up
Friday, June 20th Yep, finally put some work up there - 3 pieces from the Fine Arts I class done during my freshman year of high school. At the time, there were two teachers who taught it. You either got Mr. Preciado, pretty much an automatic A if you showed any effort, or Mr. Ianovich, somewhat the opposite. I got the latter and prematurely cursed my luck. Fortunately, his class helped me realize that I had some sort of ability beyond the elementary doodles. I remember he would always be working on his own projects (one of them was a pen drawing of a detailed wildlife scene) while we did ours...or play Solitaire. 5 years passed and I still need to work on my drawing. Click here to see the work. (2)
Almost June?!
Tuesday, May 27th I guess it has been that long since I last posted...working on it...still... Glad I kept this whole layout simple so I won't get tired of it anytime soon. *Reading last post* Well, changed jobs at the end of April to a design/assistant position at SanDisk in Milpitas. Commute's a lot better with more accessible surroundings such as Great Mall (rarely go to malls in general) and McCarthy Ranch (rarely go to ranches as well). It's been almost a year since graduating, and the post-college life has been interesting. Just thinking about everything from finances, the housing market, and what-have-you can be a bit overwhelming. Gone are the days of just being in school and making idealistic scenarios of the far-away "real world." The reality of those scenarios has prompted me to become as informed as possible so I don't screw myself over. Reminds me of the Indiana Jones villian Irina Spalko (played by Cate Blanchett) who wanted to know everything, and got her wish...except for the part where she brilliantly combusts, I'm assuming, due to information overload. I mean, c'mon, do you really want to know "everything everything"? Or just everything about what you actually want to know. I'd go with latter. Too bad, so sad Irina. I'm going to miss her ant-crushing thighs. Expect newer things soon. Well, hopefully faster than my random reminders that I actually have a website...that I'm paying money for. Call me out on it if you think I'm taking too long. (1)
So yea...wassup?!
Tuesday, February 12th Haven't been updating because of my new job at Fresh Choice corporate office as its graphic design and marketing person. A good start, at least it's in the direction I want to pursue and my college education actually applies to it. I was kinda put "in media res" in my department, so I've been pretty busy. Other than that, keeping up with dancing through Kawayan and teaching PCN Modern. Would like to find another dance crew soon, especially after watching "America's Best Dance Crew." Anyways, updated my banner with a chandelier from The Palazzo hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Visited it the day after it opened while on a family trip. Well...got to work on my time management from now on... (1)
Happy Holidays
Monday, December 24th I would just like to wish you, your family, and your friends a happy holiday season. I know the new banner isn't with a picture of the best quality...I'm still figuring out my camera with the pristine manual (as in never being touched). The picture features a tree ornament made by one of my co-workers during my stay at the company. The new year...looking forward to it. (1)
"Early Bird" is the Word
Sunday, November 18th Heh, I guess it really has been a month since my last post. I have been pretty busy primarily due to a contract job up in Mountain View. It's for a small, but rapidly growing internet company with a pretty interesting market that initially, I didn't think was that significant. I was wrong apparently or else I wouldn't have the job. Everything has been positive with the "work hard, play hard" environment with very helpful and friendly co-workers. Even better, I get to enjoy the wonderful commute both ways on the magical road called "Highway 101." Waking up early hasn't been that bad surprisingly. Overall, this is a good start for me, at least I'm in the direction of what I want to do in terms of a career. Aside the work world, I recently performed in the first recital of Kawayan Folk Arts. Sold out, filled with family, friends, and fellow artists in the dance community. In my opinion, a great show shown through the professionalism and talent of the staff and dancers. I can only anticipate greater things to come from this blossoming group. It was very rewarding to see my logo design on the posters, slideshow, and apparel, among other things. Is it just me that I think that packaging for movie DVDs, especially the covers, should have at least used the designs from their respective marketing posters? I really like movies that do that - keep the same type of cohesive design from the very start to the end. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at your DVD tower/bookcase and see which ones have covers that comprise of a collage usually of actors or scene snippets. I would guess around half. Although I would still buy a movie if I thought it was worth it, seeing accompanying designing that I feel does not match makes it a little disappointing. Just so I'm not one-sided, I can understand from a marketing point-of-view that having prominent actors on the covers can increase sales or rentals, especially if the customer has not seen the movie in the theaters. It can be done better, though. Am I the only one thinking about this? (1)
Hello World.
Thursday, October 18th This is my first website that I have done using my own domain name and server. Haven't done a website in quite some time so you may see all this evolve (can't really do much to devolve it) over time. First time using CSS for layout purposes and it's working out fine thus far. Thanks to Misty and Chris for helping me make those lame sites back in the day. So how can this site alleviate your boredom? The main content is my portfolio section which contains much of the work I have done over the years. Other than that, this blog will be updated whenever I feel like it. Yep...that's about it. I guess where I want to go with this whole site is to make a name for myself out in the art/design community (yea, probably going to take a while). Well, if anything, I thoroughly enjoy doing art and design in all aspects and thus want to continue that in some way, shape, or form regardless of what else is going on in my life. I am very open to do freelance work, and if you are interested, please don't hesitate to contact me at carlos[at]carlos-gil.net. I hope you enjoy your stay on my miniscule piece of the Web. (1) |
